The ride to the airfield was a quiet ride. Alex took hold of Kari’s hand and kept it as they rode, and he could feel the tension ease up. But it was still there. And to make matters worse the very song Kari used to always hum when they first met, Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car, was playing on the stereo inside the limousine. And it made it all just feel so sad.

“You got a fast car.

I want a ticket to anywhere.

Maybe we make a deal.

Maybe together we can get somewhere.

Anyplace is better.

Starting from zero, got nothing to lose.

Maybe we’ll make something.

Me myself, I got nothing to prove.”
